I have copper pipes from the 70’s and pinhole leaks have been happening in the neighborhood, so I’ve been keeping an eye on the pipes. I noticed a place where there is white buildup which means a pinhole is coming soon, and this was a good Saturday project. I picked up this because to replace that section there was an elbow right at the wall and joist, making protecting that area from the heat paramount. The first thing that you notice is the felt DOES, as the description promises, have ‘fiber drop when used, which is a normal phenomenon’ – basically it is a very felt like material, but it is not a very dense felt. Another reviewer said it made their hands itchy, but this did not have that effect on me. They do recommend wearing gloves, which is also important when soldering or brazing anyway. The second thing I noticed was the magnetic catch was not very strong. Only one side is magnetic, and if you put it on a nice chunk of metal, it BARELY supports the weight of the felt. Granted, this is to keep the felt closed around the pipe, but even for that purpose could use a bit more strength on the magnet side. This blanket is rated for 3000°F. Butane burns at 3100°F, Propane at 3600°F, and MAP Pro at 3800°F, so I don’t recommend hitting it with a direct blast of flame from the torch. What I can say is that to solder a joint that was an inch away from the wall, and not much more than that below the joist, neither the wall nor the joist was scortched. I also did not detect any off-putting smells.
